Scam warning

Fake Apple or Google Security Call

A call or text says it's from Apple, Google, Microsoft or Amazon security. Your account has been hacked or used to buy something, they say, and they need to “secure” it. They want a code sent to your phone, your password, or for you to install an app.

Also called: Apple support scam, iCloud hacked scam, Google account scam

The one thing to remember

Apple, Google and Microsoft don't call you out of the blue about your account. Hang up.

How it happens

  1. Your phone shows a call from “Apple Support”, or you get a text about a suspicious login.
  2. The caller says your iCloud or Google account was hacked.
  3. They ask for the code that just came to your phone, or tell you to install an app.
  4. With that, they take over your account, your photos, and sometimes your money.

Warning signs

  • An unexpected call from a tech company.
  • Being asked to read back a code.
  • Being asked for your password or to install an app.
  • Many fake “password reset” pop-ups on your phone at once.

What to do

  • Hang up.
  • To check your account, open Settings on your phone, or go to the company's website yourself.
  • Never share codes. If you did, change your password right away.
