Scam warning

Fake Bank Fraud Call

Someone calls or texts pretending to be your bank's fraud department. They say your account was hacked and you need to move your money to a “safe” account, send yourself money with Zelle, or read them a code. The safe account belongs to the scammer.

Also called: Bank impersonation, Safe account scam, Zelle scam, Fraud department scam

The one thing to remember

Your bank will never ask you to move money to “protect” it, and will never ask for the code they texted you.

How it happens

  1. You get a text: “Did you try to spend $900 at Walmart? Reply YES or NO.” Then someone calls.
  2. The caller ID may show your bank's real name.
  3. They say your account is in danger and you need to act fast.
  4. They ask for a code sent to your phone, or tell you to send money through Zelle or a wire to a new account.
  5. Some ask you to withdraw cash or buy gold, and a “bank agent” comes to collect it.

Warning signs

  • Being asked to move money to keep it safe.
  • Being asked to read back a code from a text.
  • Being told to send money to yourself with Zelle. It won't go to you.
  • Being told not to tell the bank staff in person why you're taking money out.

What to do

  • Hang up. Call the number on the back of your bank card.
  • Or go to your local branch in person.
  • Never share codes, and never move money because a caller said so.
