Scam warning
Bitcoin Machine Scam
A scammer tells you to take cash to a Bitcoin ATM, often at a gas station or grocery store, and scan a code they send you. The money goes straight to them, and it is almost impossible to get back.
Also called: Bitcoin ATM scam, Crypto ATM scam, Cryptocurrency kiosk scam
The one thing to remember
No government, bank or business will ever ask you to pay with a Bitcoin machine. If they do, it's a scam.
How it happens
- Someone scares you: your bank account is hacked, you owe a fine, or a loved one needs help.
- They tell you to withdraw cash and go to a Bitcoin machine.
- They stay on the phone and send you a QR code (a square barcode) to scan.
- You put in the cash. The scammer receives it instantly.
Warning signs
- Anyone telling you to use a Bitcoin or crypto machine.
- Being sent a QR code to scan.
- Being told to stay on the phone the whole time.
- Being told to lie to the bank about why you're taking out cash.
What to do
- Hang up. Don't put money in the machine.
- If you already did, call the phone number on the Bitcoin machine and your local police right away, and keep your receipt.
- Report it at ic3.gov.
