Scam warning

Fake Social Security Call

A caller or text says they're from the Social Security Administration. They claim your number was “suspended” or used in a crime, and that you must pay or move your money to protect it.

Also called: SSA scam, Social Security number suspended, Government imposter

The one thing to remember

Your Social Security number can't be suspended. Social Security will never threaten you or ask for gift cards, wire transfers or crypto.

How it happens

  1. You get a call, sometimes a recording, saying your Social Security number is suspended or linked to drug crimes.
  2. The caller ID may say “Social Security Administration”. That can be faked.
  3. They say you'll be arrested or lose your benefits unless you act now.
  4. They ask you to confirm your number, pay a fee, or move your savings into a “safe” account.

Warning signs

  • Being told your number is suspended or frozen.
  • Threats of arrest or losing benefits.
  • Requests for gift cards, wire transfers, cash or Bitcoin.
  • Emails or texts with official-looking badges or seals.

What to do

  • Hang up. Do not press any buttons.
  • If you're worried, call Social Security yourself at 1-800-772-1213.
  • Never give your Social Security number to someone who called you.
  • Report it at oig.ssa.gov.
