Scam warning

Fake Moving Company

A moving company gives you a cheap quote over the phone or online. Once your belongings are on the truck, the price suddenly goes way up, and they won't deliver until you pay. Some never show up at all after taking a deposit.

Also called: Moving scam, Rogue movers, Hostage goods scam

The one thing to remember

Get an in-home or video estimate in writing, and check the mover's license at ProtectYourMove.gov before you hire them.

How it happens

  1. You find a mover online with a much lower price than others.
  2. They give a quote without seeing your things.
  3. They ask for a large deposit in cash.
  4. After loading the truck, they demand much more money to deliver your things.

Warning signs

  • A quote much lower than others, given without seeing your home.
  • A large deposit, or cash only.
  • No address, no license number, or an unmarked truck.
  • Being asked to sign blank or incomplete papers.

What to do

  • For moves to another state, check the company's USDOT number at ProtectYourMove.gov.
  • Get at least 3 written estimates.
  • Pay by credit card, never a big cash deposit.
  • Ask family to help you check the company, especially when moving to assisted living.
