Scam warning
Fake Rental Listing
Scammers copy real home listings, post them for rent at a low price, and ask for a deposit or first month's rent before you can see the place. The “owner” is always away and can't show it to you.
Also called: Rental scam, Fake apartment listing, Vacation rental scam
The one thing to remember
Never pay rent or a deposit for a home you haven't seen in person, with a person you've confirmed owns it.
How it happens
- You find a lovely place for less rent than anything else nearby.
- The “owner” is a missionary, in the military, or working overseas.
- They say they'll mail you the keys once you pay.
- They want payment by wire, Zelle or gift cards, and then vanish.
Warning signs
- Rent much lower than similar places.
- An owner who can't meet you or show the home.
- Paying before you've signed a lease or seen inside.
- Being asked to wire money or use payment apps.
What to do
- See the home in person, with the owner or a licensed agent.
- Search the address online. If it's also listed for sale or rent elsewhere, be careful.
- Pay by check or credit card, never cash, wire or gift cards.
