Scam warning
Fake Contractor
Someone knocks and says they're working in the neighborhood. They noticed your roof, driveway or trees need work, and offer a special price. They take a big payment upfront and do a poor job, or no job at all.
Also called: Roofing scam, Driveway paving scam, Storm chaser scam
The one thing to remember
Get at least 3 written quotes, check the license, and never pay everything before the work is done.
How it happens
- A worker shows up, often after a storm, saying they have leftover materials.
- They point out “damage” you can't see, or even cause some.
- They offer a big discount if you decide today.
- They ask for cash or a large deposit. Then they disappear, or the price suddenly goes way up.
Warning signs
- Someone who knocks on your door without being called.
- A deal that's only good today.
- Asking for cash, or full payment, upfront.
- No written contract, license or local address.
- An out-of-state license plate or unmarked truck.
What to do
- Say “No thank you” and close the door.
- If you need work done, ask friends for a contractor they trust, and get 3 written quotes.
- Check their license with your state, and reviews online.
- Pay a small deposit only, and the rest when the work is finished.
