Scam warning

Fake Unpaid Toll Text

You get a text that says you owe a small amount for an unpaid road toll, like E-ZPass, SunPass or FasTrak, and must pay soon to avoid a fine. The link takes you to a fake site that steals your card details.

Also called: E-ZPass scam, SunPass scam, Toll text scam, Smishing

The one thing to remember

Don't click toll links in texts. Check your toll account by typing the official website yourself.

How it happens

  1. A text says: “You have an unpaid toll of $4.15. Pay now to avoid a $50 late fee.”
  2. The link goes to a website that looks official.
  3. You enter your card number to pay the small amount.
  4. The scammers now have your card, and may charge much more.

Warning signs

  • A toll bill by text message, especially if you didn't drive on a toll road.
  • A link with a strange web address.
  • A threat of late fees or losing your license.

What to do

  • Don't click. Delete the text.
  • If you might owe a toll, go to the official toll website or call the number on your toll statement.
  • Forward scam texts to 7726 (SPAM).
  • Entered your card? Call your bank right away.
