Scam warning

Fake Login or Account Email

An email or text looks like it's from Netflix, Apple, your bank, or your email provider. It says your account is locked or your payment failed, and asks you to click a link and log in. The link goes to a fake page that steals your password.

Also called: Phishing, Account locked scam, Payment failed email

The one thing to remember

Don't log in from a link in an email. Open the app or type the website address yourself.

How it happens

  1. You get a message: “Your account has been suspended” or “Your payment was declined.”
  2. There's a button: “Verify now” or “Update payment.”
  3. It opens a website that looks real, but the address is a little different.
  4. When you log in, the scammers get your password, and maybe your card number.

Warning signs

  • A message that pushes you to act right away.
  • A greeting like “Dear Customer” instead of your name.
  • A sender address that doesn't match the company.
  • A link that, when you hover your mouse over it, shows a strange address.

What to do

  • Don't click. Go to the company's app or website yourself to check.
  • If you entered a password, change it right away, and on any other site where you use it.
  • Turn on two-step login for your email and bank.
