Scam warning

Car Warranty Robocall

A recorded message says it's your “final notice” that your vehicle's warranty is expiring. If you press a button, a salesperson pushes an expensive and often useless service contract, or takes your card details.

Also called: Extended warranty scam, Auto warranty robocall

The one thing to remember

Don't press any buttons. Hang up. Your car dealer or manufacturer will contact you by mail if anything is really expiring.

How it happens

  1. A recording says this is a final notice about your car's warranty.
  2. It tells you to press 1 to speak to someone.
  3. The salesperson pushes hard to sell a costly plan, and asks for a down payment by card.
  4. Pressing any button also tells them your number works, so you get more calls.

Warning signs

  • A recorded call about your car, from a company you don't know.
  • “Final notice” or “last chance” language.
  • Pressure to pay a deposit on the phone.

What to do

  • Hang up without pressing anything.
  • Add your number to the Do Not Call list: donotcall.gov or 1-888-382-1222. Scammers ignore it, but it cuts down real sales calls.
  • Ask your phone company about free call-blocking.
