Scam warning

Fake Soldier or Overseas Worker

A scammer pretends to be a U.S. soldier, an oil rig worker, a doctor with a charity, or a ship engineer. They're kind and loving, but because they're “far away” they ask for money for leave papers, plane tickets, customs fees or a stuck package.

Also called: Military romance scam, Oil rig scam, Overseas doctor scam

The one thing to remember

Real soldiers never need you to pay for leave, travel or phone calls. The military takes care of that.

How it happens

  1. Someone in a uniform or work gear sends you a friend request.
  2. They say they are a widow or widower, often with a child.
  3. They can't video chat because of their job.
  4. They ask for help paying for leave, a flight home, medical bills, or to release a package of money or gold.

Warning signs

  • They can't video chat or call because of their job.
  • Requests for money for leave, travel, or customs fees.
  • A box of money or gold that needs a fee to be released.
  • Photos that seem too perfect.

What to do

  • Never send money, gift cards or crypto.
  • Ask a family member to do a “reverse image search” on their photo.
  • Report the profile on the website you met them.
