Scam warning
Fake Insurance Agent
Someone pretends to be an insurance agent, or sells a policy that doesn't really exist, for car, health, life or home insurance at a very low price. You only find out you're not covered when you need to make a claim.
Also called: Insurance scam, Ghost broker, Fake health plan, Fake life insurance
The one thing to remember
Check that an agent is licensed with your state's insurance department before you pay.
How it happens
- You get a call, ad or visit offering insurance much cheaper than usual.
- The agent wants payment fast, sometimes by Zelle, cash or gift cards.
- You get papers that look real.
- When you have an accident or a medical bill, the policy doesn't exist.
Warning signs
- Prices much lower than other companies.
- Payment to a personal account or by payment app.
- An agent who can't give you a license number.
- Pressure to sign up today.
What to do
- Check the agent and company with your state's insurance department. Find yours at content.naic.org.
- Call the insurance company yourself to confirm your policy.
- Pay the insurance company directly, not the agent personally.
