Scam warning

Fake Check Scam

A scammer sends you a check, often for more than they owe you. They ask you to deposit it and send back the extra. Days later, the bank finds out the check is fake and takes the full amount back from you.

Also called: Overpayment scam, Counterfeit check scam, Mystery shopper scam

The one thing to remember

Money from a check can show up in your account before the bank knows it's fake. Never send money back from a check.

How it happens

  1. You get a check, for selling something, a “job”, a prize, or as a mystery shopper.
  2. It's for more than expected. They say it was a mistake.
  3. They ask you to deposit it and send back the difference with a wire transfer, gift cards or Zelle.
  4. The bank later finds out the check was fake. You owe the bank all of the money.

Warning signs

  • A check for more money than you expected.
  • Being asked to send money back or to someone else.
  • Pressure to act quickly or keep it secret.
  • A prize or job you didn't apply for.

What to do

  • Never send money back from a check someone sent you.
  • Ask your bank to confirm the check is real. Waiting a few days for it to “clear” is not enough.
  • If someone overpays, tell them to send a new check for the right amount.
